Welcome to the official home of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Department of Maine.

For over a century, the VFW has stood as a pillar of support for those who have stepped onto foreign soil to defend American values. As we mark the United States Semiquincentennial (250th Anniversary) in 2026, the Department of Maine remains more committed than ever to ensuring that the veterans of the “Pine Tree State” receive the honor, care, and representation they earned through their sacrifice.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple but profound: To foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts. To serve our veterans, the military, and our communities. To advocate on behalf of all veterans. We operate under the core belief that “No one does more for veterans.”

Serving Maine’s Veterans in 2026

The Department of Maine consists of thousands of members across dozens of local Posts, from the coastal towns of York County to the northern forests of Aroostook. Our activities in 2026 focus on:

  • Service & Advocacy: Our accredited VFW Service Officers provide free, professional assistance to veterans and their families in navigating VA claims. In 2026, we have expanded our outreach to ensure veterans in rural Maine have equal access to healthcare and disability benefits.
  • Legislative Leadership: We are a powerful voice in Augusta and Washington, D.C. This year, we continue to fight for policies that address veteran housing, mental health, and the unique challenges faced by our aging veteran population and returning service members.
  • Community Engagement: Through events like the annual Ice Fishing Derby, the VFW Day of Service (May 2026), and local Military Appreciation Days, we strengthen the bond between those who served and the communities they call home.
  • Youth & Education: We believe in the next generation. Programs like Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen allow Maine’s students to express their patriotism and earn scholarships for their future.

Celebrating 250 Years of Liberty

The year 2026 is a historic milestone for our nation. The VFW Department of Maine is proud to lead local celebrations honoring the 250th anniversary of American independence. For us, this celebration is a reminder that liberty is preserved by those willing to serve in distant lands.

Membership: A Legacy of Service

The VFW is an elite organization. Membership is reserved for those who have served in a theater of operations during a foreign war, insurgency, or expedition. If you have the heart of a servant and the soul of a patriot, you belong with us.

Join a local Post today. Stand with those who stood for you.
